Rewilding the Future

For Art Basel Miami Beach, Rivian invited Tobias Hutzler to create an immersive project for Rewilding the Future, a week-long exhibition exploring the relationship between nature, technology, color, and sustainable design.

 

Inspired by Borealis, Rivian’s new exterior color for the R1 platform, the work translates the vehicle’s identity into an atmospheric world where light, motion, and space converge. Rather than presenting an object, it invites visitors to enter a living landscape shaped by shifting illumination, atmosphere, and perception.

 

Building immersive worlds through light, Tobias transforms the space into an experience where technology becomes emotional and physical, allowing audiences to sense energy not simply as something seen, but something felt.

 

Drawing inspiration from the Aurora Borealis while remaining rooted in Rivian’s philosophy of exploration and environmental harmony, light becomes the project’s primary architectural material. Rather than illuminating the vehicle, it constructs a spatial environment that continuously shifts between stillness and movement.

At the center sits the Rivian R1, surrounded by drifting fields of light. The vehicle becomes less an object than a quiet anchor within an ever-changing landscape of atmosphere.

 

Rather than treating technology as spectacle, the work presents it as atmosphere: subtle, immersive, and deeply connected to nature. Created as part of Rewilding the Future, the project reflects Rivian’s vision of design, nature, and technology existing in harmony. The result is a temporary world where technology dissolves into experience, inviting visitors to inhabit a space suspended between natural phenomenon and human invention.
